Belgore, Kwara Differ on Ahmed's Performance
Action Congress of Nigeria Kwara State governorship candidate in the 2011 election, Dele Belgore (SAN), has scored the administration of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed low.
The Ahmed-led administration, he said, had not satisfied the yearnings of the people of the state.
But the Speaker, of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Razak Atunwa, and Ahmed’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, said the administration had performed well.
According to the duo, the state has provided infrastructure and essential amenities as well as boosted the people’s standard of living.
Belgore, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday, said Ahmed’s performance was not appreciable, just as his leadership was intolerant of criticisms from the opposition.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria said, “Unfortunately, I will not score the administration very high because government is about improving lives of its people and it cannot by any unbiased assessment be said that Ahmed’s government has improved the lot of the people of Kwara.
“Part of the government’s problem is that they need to change their mind set: the mindset that whenever one makes any suggestion, they immediately dismiss it as one playing politics or an attack on the administration.
“We are Kwarans; we want the government to do well because if it does well, it benefits everybody.
“So if they change that, they will begin to redress the deficit credibility that they have, because at every point, they are lying about programmes that they are not implementing. They are telling people the state of affairs of our finances when we all know that it is not like that.”
But Atunwa said the Ahmed administration had exhibited accountability, transparency and respect for the views of others.
The Speaker said, “In terms of delivering the goodies to the people, again it has performed creditably well. I will score the government high. In infrastructure provision, good roads, the aviation college, the cargo terminal, health care facilities, the government has performed creditably.”
Akorede noted that the administration had accelerated socio-economic development and provided many infrastructure and amenities in the state.
