Kwara Govt. Approves Planting of 2m Seedlings in 2013
The Kwara Government has approved the planting of two million seedlings in 2013 to regenerate the forest, the Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Mr. Anthony Towoju, has said.
Towoju said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ilorin.
He said that the state government's decision to plant additional two million seedlings had been captured in the 2013 budget of the state which was passed by the state House of Assembly.
The commissioner said, as soon as the budget received the governor's assent, the implementation would commence.
Towoju appealed to the people of the state to complement government's good intention by engaging in general farming instead of destroying the forest reserves.
He noted that the state government would continue to be alive to its responsibility of conserving the forest so as to prevent the hazards of deforestation .
The commissioner stressed the need for more preventive measures of discouraging people from illegal felling of trees.
He said that the ministry, on Tuesday, apprehended a truck with bags of charcoal at Eiyenkorin in Asa Local Government Area of the state while transporting the commodity to Lagos.
Towoju said another 69 bags of charcoal were confiscated at various parts of the IIorin West and IIorin South Local Government Areas of the state.
The commissioner warned that a fine of N50,000 or one year imprisonment or both awaited anyone who engaged in charcoal production in any part of the state. (NAN)
