KWASU Launches Centre for Gender Studies to Promote Equity, Digital Inclusion
Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has launched its Centre for Gender Studies as part of efforts to promote gender equity, digital inclusion, and sustainable development.
The launch, which held at the university's Mini Convocation Arena, brought together academics, researchers, policymakers, and development experts to discuss strategies for advancing gender equality through education, research, and digital empowerment.
Addressing the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, described the establishment of the centre as a major milestone in the university's commitment to scholarship, inclusiveness, and social transformation.
He stated that the centre would serve as a platform for research, advocacy, capacity building, and policy engagement on gender-related issues.
Professor Jimoh noted that while digital technology now shapes access to information, education, and employment, many women and vulnerable groups still face challenges in accessing digital opportunities and acquiring digital skills.
He called on stakeholders to develop practical solutions that would strengthen digital inclusion and sustainable development.
Earlier, the Acting Director of the Centre, Dr Latifat Kehinde Olatinwo, stated that the centre was established to advance scholarship, innovation, community engagement, and national development through a gender-focused approach.
Delivering the keynote address, Professor Janice Olawoye of the University of Ibadan stressed the need to bridge the gender gap in digital access and meaningful digital participation, describing digital literacy as essential for communication, commerce, information access, and online safety.
Also speaking, a gender expert, Dr Olawunmi Cordilia Macaulay-Adeyelure, called for stronger digital safety measures and inclusive digital policies to protect women and vulnerable groups from online harassment.
The new centre is expected to strengthen research, advocacy, and policy development while supporting efforts to promote gender equality and digital empowerment in Nigeria.
