NUT Urges Governor Abdulrazaq to Extend Teachers' Retirement Age to 65
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has warned states that have yet to implement the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage to act without further delay.
NUT President, Audu T. Amba, issued the warning during an interview with journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Monday, on the sidelines of the union's 19th quadrennial state conference for 2026.
Represented at the event by the union's National Social Secretary, Titilope Adebanjo, Amba also urged Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq to extend teachers' retirement age from 60 to 65 years.
"Some states are yet to implement the recently approved minimum wage for our members. We have informed all defaulting states that we will not stay aloof. We will mobilize our members to ensure that governments act promptly," Amba said.
The union also commended President Bola Tinubu for improving the welfare of teachers nationwide.
"Tinubu's government is really trying for teachers. We will continue to appeal for better economic conditions for our members. We appreciate him and wish him well in his leadership," Amba added.
On the issue of insecurity, the NUT President expressed optimism that school environments in conflict-prone areas would be safer in the next academic term. "Some schools were shut because of insecurity. I believe that by the time schools resume next term, these challenges will have been addressed. President Tinubu has assured us that the federal government is working tirelessly to ensure schools and their surroundings are safe," he stated.
Commenting on teachers' welfare, State Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Yusuf Agboola, praised the Kwara State Government for the regular payment of teachers' salaries and addressed long-standing issues, including arrears owed by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the implementation of Teachers Specific Allowances (TSA) of 27.5 percent and 22 percent, respectively.
