Kwara Launches Free Cancer Screening for Breast, Prostate, and Liver Cancers
The Kwara State Government has commenced a comprehensive free screening exercise for breast, prostate, and liver cancers across the state.
The initiative was officially launched in Ilorin as part of activities marking this year's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with the primary aim of promoting early detection and prevention among residents.
Residents across all sixteen local government areas can access the free screening at designated centers, including the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), General Hospital, Offa, and the Primary Healthcare Centre, Bode Saadu.
Speaking at the launch, the First Lady of Kwara State, Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq, emphasized that early detection remains key to reducing cancer-related deaths, citing data from the National Cancer Institute. She reaffirmed the government's commitment to public health education and timely medical intervention.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina El-Imam, described cancer as a major global health challenge. She noted that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women, while prostate and liver cancers primarily affect men.
Dr. El-Imam also disclosed that the State Government's recent approval for the construction of the Abdul Samad Rabiu Cancer Treatment Centre further underscores its commitment to improving cancer care and management.
