Date: 2024-11-14

According to Voice of Nigeria, the Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, Mallam Rafiu Ajakaye, has highlighted the essential role of media unions in championing journalists' welfare and addressing challenges within the industry to foster a more equitable society.

Ajakaye made these remarks during a courtesy visit from the newly inaugurated executive members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) at the Government House in Ilorin. He emphasized the need to improve journalists' welfare, pointing to the persistent issues of low and inconsistent salaries, especially in private media firms.

Calling the insufficient support for journalists a matter of concern, Ajakaye urged professional bodies to sustain efforts in advocating for better working conditions across the industry.

The Chief Press Secretary also called for stronger collaboration between media unions and the state government, encouraging comprehensive media coverage of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq's administration's initiatives and programs.

He assured the NAWOJ executives that his office remains committed to partnering with them and supporting their goals throughout their tenure.

Ajakaye extended his congratulations to the new NAWOJ leadership and reaffirmed his office's openness to collaborative efforts, pledging his support for the association's success.

In her remarks, the Chairperson of NAWOJ in Kwara State, Hajia Bashirah Ayantola, praised Governor AbdulRazaq's administration for its commitment to gender equality, noting the appointment of women to significant positions across state ministries.

She explained the unique responsibilities women face in both domestic and societal roles and requested continued government support to help them fulfill these responsibilities effectively.

Also speaking, former National Vice President of NAWOJ, Hajia Bilikis Oladimeji, emphasized the importance of addressing gender-related issues, which are a priority worldwide.

She commended Governor AbdulRazaq for his proactive stance on gender issues within the state and praised the administration's recent initiatives, such as the statewide program for treating hypertension and diabetes.
