NUC Names UNILORIN as Best Counselling Centre

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has adjudged the Counselling Centre, University of Ilorin as one of the best among all the universities in the North Central zone of the country.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Kunle Akogun, the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs Department, of the institution in Ilorin.

According to the statement, the presentation of the award took place at the NUC Headquarters, Abuja, at an occasion presided over by the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruquyyatu Rufa'I.

The Director, Student Support Services of NUC, Mrs Uwani Yahya, said that "in 2011 the commission conducted an assessment of counselling centres in all universities in Nigeria".

It stated that six counselling centres from the six geo-political zones in the country were rated as the best.

They are: University of Ilorin, North Central; Bayero University, North West; University of Maiduguri, North East; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, South East; University of Benin, South- South, and University of Lagos, South West.

"Each of the universities was presented with two desktop personal computers," the statement further said.

It advised the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the computers and ensure compliance with NUC to ensure compliance with benchmark statements on Counselling and Human Development Centre.

At the occasion, the minister emphasised the need to provide supportive services to students in Nigerian universities to promote teaching and learning and enhance students' growth and development.

According to the minister, the transformation agenda of the Federal Government can only succeed, if effective and credible education is provided to the populace.
