Ramadan: Customers Lament Soaring Food Prices In Kwara

Date: 2022-04-05

Three days after the commencement of the Ramadan fast, the prices of foodstuffs and other essential commodities have soared in most markets across the state.

Prices of fruits, vegetable oil, melon, and beverages that are in high demand during the Ramadan fast have gone up.

Customers who spoke with Daily Trust were however not happy with the hike considering the current economic hardship in-country.

In Obbo markets, checks revealed that the prices of rice, beans, fruits, and beverages have gone up by about 15 percent.

A customer, Abolore Hussein who said he was coming to the market for the first time since the commencement of Ramadan expressed frustration over the development.

According to a customer, Sidikat Yusuf, "we used to buy tomatoes N150 per layer but now N300. The small basket then was N700 but now N1,000.

Mrs. Garuba Halimat lamented the increase in a basket of tomatoes from N21,000 to N27,000.

Also, Hajia Lateefat Abdullahi, a civil servant said 5 liters of vegetable oil sold for N5,160 before Ramadan is now N8,000 while a bag of rice is now N32,000 from N29,000.

"The price of vegetable oil unlike palm oil is unbelievable this Ramadan", she said.

Bukola Oladimeji said she bought a small size watermelon which sold for around N300 for N700 adding that a cartoon of three crown milk has increased to over N1,000.
