Rotary Club Stages Walk Against Child Abuse, Social Vices In Ilorin

The Rotary Club of Ilorin Sunrise on Sunday staged a walk through strategic locations in Ilorin to campaign against child abuse and other social vices identified as causes of unrest in the society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaigns walk, tagged "Peace and Conflict, Prevention/Resolution" commenced at the popular post office bridge in Ilorin to Muritala Muhammed Road, Maraba, Opomalu, Amilegbe and Emir's Road and later at Post Office area.

Addressing the newsmen after the rally, Mr Tunde Alade said that the group embarked on the walk to commemorate the Peace and Conflict Prevention and Resolution month.

Alade said that the campaign was to seek solutions to the structural causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. "Millions of people all over the world are currently displaced by armed conflict or persecution.

"In fact, 90 per cent of casualties in armed conflicts are civilians, half of which are children.

"Through service projects and Rotary programs, the Rotary family is committed to pursuing projects that address the structural causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources"

"This has also lead to different vices such as child abuse, rape, bullying, human trafficking, domestic violence.

"The walk was to create awareness and sensitise people around Ilorin metropolis on the need to embrace peace and live in unity.

"We also live in an environment with ethnic and religious differences and we need to further sensitise the people on the importance of living together in peace regardless of our differences.

"The need to send children to school and stop child labour. Other clubs around, also have different programmes to mark this day, such as lectures and symposium" he said. (NAN)
