Kwara'll obey S'Court's order on ex-CJ - Assembly
Counsel for the Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr. Yusuf Ali, has said the Assembly will obey the Friday's verdict of the Supreme Court, ordering the reinstatement of the Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Raliat Habeeb-Elelu.
In a telephone interview with our correspondent in Ilorin on Sunday, Ali stated that the Assembly was law-abiding and believed in the rule of law.
He said all parties must comply with the judgment of the Supreme Court as the highest court in the land.
Ali said, "We believe in the rule of law. The Supreme Court has ruled. All the parties normally will abide. I have advised my clients that they should obey the judgment and I am sure they will do so.
"The lesson everybody has learnt is that we should follow procedure, because the judgment faulted the procedure adopted in removing her. We have all learnt that we should try as much as possible to follow procedure, to stand by the law and the constitution."
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba, in a statement on Sunday said steps were being taken to comply with the judgment. He added that the government was law-abiding and had strong belief in the supremacy of the law.
According to Oba, government's demonstrated neutrality on the issue, as all the reinstated justice's entitlements were being paid why the case lasted.
However, the Kwara State Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Kayode Olawepo, has warned against resisting the verdict.
This followed a protest on Friday by judicial workers in the state under the aegis of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, Kwara State branch against the verdict. The protesters urged the National Judicial Council to reverse the verdict.
But Olawepo in a statement on Sunday stated that the sacking of Habeeb-Elelu was unlawful and unjust.
According to him, the alleged continued seizure of pension arrears due to Kwara State pensioners and the entitlements of some councillors and council chairmen in the state was also unjust.
Oba said "For the umpteenth time, the state government was not owing any pensioner of the state's civil service. The arrears of pensioners dating back to the pre 2003 period were settled on instalments since the administration of the immediate past governor, Senator Bukola Saraki."
