Telecommunication expert calls for enhancement of laws that will make telecoms industry friendly in Nigeria

Date: 2018-04-02

A Telecommunication Expert and member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers , Engineer Bankole Dare has advised the National Assembly to enact laws that will make telecommunication industry friendly in the country so as to reduce the present high rate in the telecommunication rates.

Engineer Bankole who is the Managing Director of Emmavic Engineering Limited , Lagos gave the advice in Ilorin , the Kwara State capital while featuring on a Radio Kwara personality interview programme Playing Host.

He observed that the Right of Way for telecommunication operators in most states of the federation is too high for the operators to cope with thereby discouraging telecoms operators from deploying their services to states of the federation.

Engineer Bankole lamented that some states charge as high as ten thousand Naira per meter to lay cables and therefore called for reduction and uniformity among states in this regard.

The telecoms expert described epileptic power supply the nation is battling with as one of the greatest challenges confronting the sector as most telecommunication operators have to either rely on solar, generator or the national grid to power their equipment which according to him, is too expensive to cope with.

He disclosed that the federal government has almost concluded arrangements to connect all states through the installation of cameras to track down insurgents and other criminal activities for effective surveillance across the country but said the major snag to ensure the success of the project is the optical fiber cables which the government is working in partnership with telecommunication experts to import into the country.

According to him, the present statistics across the world showed that Nigeria is just about thirty percent developed in terms of fibers technology which he rated as a failure and described fiber optic cable as the solution to quality service delivery in telecommunications worldwide.

Engineer Bankole added that the quality of communication and telecommunication in Nigeria is very poor compared with other countries of the world a development he attributed to lack of fiber optic cable network which he said experts are working on not only to improve quality service but reduce the high cost of telecommunication services in the country.

According to him , his company is into improving the services of Airtel network in Kwara state and some other states of the federation so that customers using the communication network would enjoy the services for their money through the laying of cables and solicited for more support of the state government to hasten the project.

He enjoined the unemployed youths to go into the telecommunication industry by making themselves employable stressing that the sector is presently the highest employer of Labour and commended the federal government for patronizing indigenous engineers in most of its high powered projects.
