Why we postponed LG polls in Kwara - Ahmed

Date: 2017-04-10

The Governor of Kwara State, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, has said that the state cannot afford to conduct local government elections now because of lack of resources.

He said the extension of the initial three months tenure of the local government transition implementation caretaker committees (TIC) by another three was to ensure there was no vacuum at the third tier of government.

Speaking at the monthly meeting of the APC in Ilorin, Governor Ahmed said the local government councils in the state were just getting stabilised in meeting basic requirements of their workers.

"To attempt any election at this level of governance will mean additional pressure on their meagre resources," he said.

The governor promised to use the expected 25 per cent of the Paris-London loan refund to assist the local government councils offset part of their outstanding salary arrears and for critical infrastructure in the state.
