Lawmakers kick against non-audit of Kwara account

Date: 2017-03-09

Kwara State House of Assembly yesterday queried failure of the state government to present an audit of the sate accounts for the 2015 financial year, nine months after the statutory deadline.

To unravel the circumstances surrounding this, the lawmakers have summoned four state officials, who have links with the development. Those summoned by the legislators are the Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Ademola Banu and his counterpart in Economic Planning, Alhaji Wasiu Odewale; the Accountant General, Alhaji Suleiman lshola and the Auditor General, Mr. Adeyeye Samuel. They are to appear before the House of Assembly today.

The decision of the lawmakers, it was gathered, followed the adoption of an explanation under Matters of General Public Importance raised by Hon. Taiwo Abdullahi, representing APC, Owode Oníre Constituency) on the non-audited account of the state for 2015, during which, he noted that the exercise was already nine months behind the stipulated time line. Abdullahi, however, argued that the development had incapacitated the state Auditor General from performing his duty.

While speaking on the resolution, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Ali Ahmad noted that those who were responsible for the release of funds needed to provide explanation on why they have not done so, nine months after due date.
