The Kwara State Officials Wives Association (KWASOWA) on Wednesday distributed foodstuff and cash to Christian widows in the state ahead of Christmas.

Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, the wife of the state governor, who is the chairperson of the association, presented the Christmas package to the widows at the Government House, Ilorin.

Represented by Hajia Khadijat Gold, Wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed said that due to the prevailing situation in the country, there was need to reach out to the less privileged in the society, especially widows.

"We are equally aware that in this period of scarcity of essentials of life and skyrocketing prices of existing ones, the widows will stand to suffer," she said.

Ahmed said that it was disheartening to see widows celebrating bleak Christmas with their children and other dependents.

She explained that Christmas was celebrated to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ and a time for sober reflection, on humility, piety and forgiving spirit.

Also speaking at the occasion, wife of the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Hajia Aishat Ajibade, advised the widows to entrust their faiths in God.

She told them of God's promise to care for the orphans and widows in all their times of adversity. Newsmen reports that some of the foodstuff distributed included bags of rice, semovita, spaghetti, salt, cooking oil and cash.
