Buhari urged to fight institutional corruption

Date: 2016-10-10

An Ilorin based legal practitioner, Barr AbdulAkeem Mustapha (SAN) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to institutionalise the war against corruption to achieve the change mantra he promised Nigerians.

Ha also urged the National Assembly to pass a law that will ensure that cases are concluded at the Court of Appeal instead of getting to the Supreme Court to sanitise the country's judicial system.

In an interaction with journalists in Ilorin at the weekend, Kwara State, Mustapha said that there is clear difference between fighting corrupt people and institutional corruption. He, therefore, admonished the Federal Government to ensure that the right people are put in the right positions in the country's anti-graft agencies without ethnic or political bias.

According to him, even the United States has amended almost all the clauses in her constitution as it is a living document. The National Assembly should enact a law that will ensure that most court cases end in the court of Appeal instead of the Supreme Court as it is applicable in USA and the United Kingdom.

He said, "It is only in the Nigerian Supreme Courts that we have the highest number of cases all over the world while countries like United States that have a population of over 400 million people only has seven Supreme Court justices and everything is moving on smoothly and they handle cases effectively."

Mustapha who commended the efforts of the present administration in the fight against corruption, urged the government to put in place a functional institution and have a frame work that will not only forestall corruption, but make the system to be much more efficient and effective.
