Date: 2016-05-27

Experts in the field of ICT have emphasized the importance of INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY knowledge for workers in the field of da'awah , and the generality of the Muslim Ummah. They added that "it is the age of IT that we live today, and it is undisputable that everyone has need of the IT tools despite their inherent dangers.

They also noted that the IT world has the widest audience (over one billion users), which makes it highly suitable and fertile for the propagation of Islam, therefore, carefully tapping from their benefits while guarding against their evils, stressing that the IT today has infiltrated all aspect of communication including radio, television, electronic and social media, mobile phones and apps, and internet.

This was contained in a communique issued by AS-SUNNAH ACADEMY OF DA'WAH AND RESEARCH, shortly after the eleventh annual seminar of the organization, which centred on "INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: USES AND CONSEQUENCES".

The seminar also observed that, IT has a lot of beneficial uses, among which include being the fastest, cheapest and widest means of reaching out to a large target audience, conducting knowledge-based researches using search engines on the internet and installed applications like 'maktabatus shamilah, access to large data in electronic form like books and short articles.

It also added that Scholars of Islam in the present age recognised the benefits of all forms of IT and recommended their uses, while also warning about the associated evils of them, among which include callers' indiscriminate dependence on sources from the internet without verification and or authentication, especially by the uninformed in the matters of the religion whether with respect to belief or deeds.

"waste of time, which may lead to abandoning legislated duties in religion while being engrossed in the frivolity of the IT, exposure to obscene sights and corrupt cultures, which most likely leads to corruption of the mind, the destruction of family and societal values. The evils of IT can be prevented by creating more awareness through seminars like this, continuous reminders by scholars and more attention by parents to their children's use of IT through counseling but not harsh denials".

The group however recommended that Muslims, including callers to the way of Allah, should learn the use of IT tools and derive maximum benefits from them. It added that they should be weary of corrupt hosts on the web, abstain, and warn them, while parents should wake up to their responsibilities to their children, by not leaving them to the whims of the society, especially in this age of IT. It also called on government at all levels should regulate the IT industry in a way that corrupt sites are censored.

In his lecture, Professor Abdul Ganeey Oladosu urged Muslims to take the good side of IT as they explore into the world of information, communication and technology (ICT) to read all subject and do not take it as haram because all knowledge is for Allah and to emulate what the Assunnah has taught us.
