Kwara United set to break Federation Cup jinx - Oladimeji
Kwara United FC will go beyond previous records achieved in the Federation Cup by attempting to win it this season, says the Chairman of the club, Prince Oladimeji Ladi Thompson.
After watching rejuvenated Kwara United FC dismantle Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Ilorin FC 5-2 in the final of the State FA Cup decided at the Main-Bowl of the Kwara State Stadium on Sunday, Prince Oladimeji said that with the support of government and Kwarans, the task of breaking the Federation Cup jinx, though a difficult task, is summountable. 'Kwara United FC in history, has not won the trophy before. This is the time for us to break the jinx', he said.
He commended the state government, under the leadership of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for providing the enabling atmosphere for the team to flourish and flower, and the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development for their support. Prince Oladimeji also appreciated the Fans and Supporters of the team and the stakeholders for their support.
While commending the players for putting up a wonderful performance in the final match, he charged them not to get carried away with the victory, as the tasks ahead are much more demanding. 'Apart from our plans to do well in the Federation Cup, we want to return the team back to the Premier League', he averred.
The match produced seven goals, all in the second half, after a barren first half which brought out the best from the two teams. Kwara United FC returned for the second half smoking, and defender Akeem Onigbari opened the floodgate of goals when his long range shot was deflected past goalkeeper Boje Abdullahi.
Jimoh Ahmed, in the 55th minute and Adesina Gata in the 57th minuted took advantage of the confused ABS Ilorin FC defence, marshalled by hard working Ajanah Chinedu.
ABS Ilorin FC reduced the tally in the 61st minute through Jamilu Danjuma, after a goalmouth scramble, The team looks good to turn the table at that point, combining well especially in the middle. Two quick changes by ABS Ilorin FC, Ajibola Otegbeye and Audu Akeem replaced Mohammed.
Mohammed and Karatu Lukman looks like productive introductions, but that seems not to be enough as Kwara United FC again struck in the 79th minute through Chinedu Akovou.
Abbulhameed Lukman again scored for ABS Ilorin FC in the 86th minute before substitute Taiwo Abdulrahman completed the rout with a clean sweep in the 88th minute.
The State FA Cup was supported by the Proprietor of a female football team in Ilorin, Cerezo Queens, Augustus Ikenwa, who provided branded jerseys for the two finalists and the match officials. He said that he is supporting the State FA because the FA is open to ideas, and Kwara is investor friendly.
