NASS, UNILORIN differ on 3-year validity for JAMB results
AUTHORITY of the University of Ilorin has condemned attempt by the leadership of the National Assembly to sponsor a bill that will lead to the banking of JAMB results by applicants to be valid for a period of three years.
The university management stressed that such move would bring about laziness and decadence in the education sector.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that ?banking of results would afford candidates the opportunity of using the same result obtained at one sitting of JAMB's entrance examination to seek admission into the university for two to three years instead of writing it annually.
Vice chancellor of the university, Professor Abdul Ganiyu Ambali stated this on Tuesday during his annual media parley with members of the Correspondents' Chapel in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
Ambali said: "If students are allowed to bank their result for re-application in the subsequent years, they will remain relaxed over their past efforts and will never improve in any standard and finally admitted into higher institutions as dull intakes. So I am against the move because it won't do us any good. So let them sit for another exam in the subsequent years."
The VC, meanwhile, intensified commitment to commence production of goat milk, stressing that such innovation would further impact positively on the host community.
He noted that the university had commenced moves to search for varieties of goats that could produce milk in large quantities from some neighbouring African countries.
Speaking on admission slot to applicants from across the country, Professor Ambali said the Nigerian University Commission, NUC, had approved the university's request to admit more students for its 2015/2016 academic session from 7,000 to about 9,000.
He said: "We have concluded arrangement with a private firm known as Orange Group from Lagos to construct 5,000 bed space hostels to ease challenges of hostel accommodation facing the students. Federal government has also given us an approval to build two additional? hostels on the campus."
The VC also said that the university management had acquired additional laboratory equipment that would ensure an enabling learning condition for its students.
"We are looking forward in 2016 to re-emphasise and concentrate our efforts to sustain the feats the university had achieved in the previous years as the best," he said.
He therefore ?assured that the university would continue to live up to standard in order to ensure that its slogan, 'Better by Far,' was genuinely retained, adding that although "the university is still in need of more funds to execute numerous projects and innovations."
