Independence Anniversary: Kwara Monarchs, Religious Leaders Sue For Peace, Tolerance
Some traditional rulers and religious leaders in Kwara have urged Nigerians to imbibe the culture of unity, religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence to move the country forward.
The leaders made the appeal in separate messages to mark the country's 55th independence anniversary on Thursday in Omu-Aran, Kwara.
They observed that the desired change and transformation for the country could only take place in an atmosphere that was devoid of violence and acrimony.
The leaders said it was with the support of the citizenry that the laudable initiatives of the present administration aimed at transforming the country could be realised.
The Olomu of Omu-Aran, Oba Charles Ibitoye, stressed the need for Nigerians to consolidate on the gains of the peaceful transition of power in May.
"Our youths and elders alike need to change their attitude by being positive and productive.
"We should learn to be steadfast, dedicated, persevere and be supportive of government programmes and policies to ensure that the yearnings and aspirations of the people become a reality," he said.
The Alofa of Iloffa, Oba Samuel Dada, in a remark, expressed the readiness of the traditional institution to promote rule of law and good governance particularly at the grassroots.
Another ruler, Oba Daniel Dada, the Elegosi, on his part, urged the people irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds to shun acts capable of heating up the polity.
"We should learn to be our brothers' keepers irrespective of ethno-religious or political affiliations.
"We should also be mindful of the fact Nigeria is a country blessed with abundant natural resources which can only be tapped through the collective responsibility of all," he said.
The Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Irepodun Local Government Area, Pastor David Omorinoye, also urged Nigerians to remain united and pray for their leaders at all levels.
"We have to continue to be our brothers' keepers and become one in our collective effort to assist the present administration in moving the country forward."
Alhaji Sodiq Afolayan, the Chief Imam of Omu-Aran Central Mosque, said Nigeria needed a divine intervention through prayers to overcome its numerous challenges. (NAN)
