Students' protest: Govt to provide transformer for Kwara Poly community
Apparently as a fall-out of Friday's protest by residents of Elekoyangan, the neighboring community of Kwara State Polytechnic and some students of the institution over lack of power supply caused by a damaged transformer, the State Government is set to provide a new transformer for the community, it was gathered.
The protest, it would be recalled, disturbed vehicular movement along the ever-busy old Jebba road leading to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), while the protesters also defied the mobile policemen, who were hurriedly drafted to the scene to quell the protest.
The policemen were firing tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters who later fought back by throwing pebbles.
The protest, it was gathered, started from Elekoyangan community but the students later re-grouped at the polytechnic gate to continue the demonstration. They claimed they have made fruitless efforts to get the electricity problem in the area fixed by appealing to the state government.
Some of the protesters said the demonstration was the only means of venting their spleen over the refusal of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).to hearken to their demands by replacing the collapsed transformer.
However, the protest seemed to have paid off as the government was said to have commenced move to solve the community problem.
This is, however, not after the institution has been temporarily shut to forestall destruction of lives and property.
A statement by the polytechnic management announced the closure of the school on the order of the visitor and the state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, adding that the government would soon provide transformer to the community.
The statement read in part, "The government has put necessary machinery in motion to provide a new transformer for elekoyangan community.
"The students should note that anyone involved in further disturbance of peace is on his or her own. The date for resumption will be announced in due course".
