'Why Kwara Express workers resisted'
Workers of Kwara State Transport Corporation popularly known as "Kwara Express" opposed the repeal of the law establishing the corporation for fear of job loss, Daily Trust gathered.
The repeal which took effect last week transferred all the assets and liabilities of the defunct Kwara State Transport Corporation to Harmony Holdings Ltd, (the investments holding company of Kwara State Government). The new entity will now operate as Harmony Transport Service Ltd.
Prior to repeal of the edict, the workers protested to the then House of Assembly to stop the proposal but the House went ahead to pass the repeal law which has been endorsed by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.
Some of the workers who spoke to Daily Trust on condition of anonymity, said though they were not averse to reform of the corporation, they were afraid that the new management may lay them off.
Chairman of Kwara Express Workers' Union, Alhaji Ajao Jaji, however said the workers had accepted their fate since the government insisted on changing the law establishing the corporation but warned against victimization.
"We don't have any problem with the current development. Our main concern is that all the assurances coming from government were not backed by any paper. Our demands like minimum wage arrears, promotion, among others have not been met. We appeal to the government to accede to our demands", he said.
