'Why states can't embark on capital projects' - Atunwa
Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly, Barrister Razaq Atunwa, yesterday attributed the inability of most states to embark on capital projects to the dwindling revenue and "indiscriminate deduction of revenue from the Federation Account by the federal government."
Atunwa, who is also the Director-General of All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Committee in the state, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to stop such deductions.
Addressing APC members in Ilorin, he said declining revenue earnings had crippled most states and prevented them from performing their statutory responsibilities.
He urged Nigerians to vote for all the APC candidates in the forthcoming elections to "change the present situation and make democracy more meaningful."
He assured the people of Kwara that the state government would continue to be responsive to their yearnings, despite the dwindling revenue.
The speaker expressed confidence in the ability of General Muhammadu Buhari to tackle corruption and insecurity, which he said had retarded the progress of the country.
He added that the party would flag off its state campaign in Offa Local Government Area tomorrow (Wednesday) while the Buhari presidential campaign train would be in Kwara State on Thursday.
