Lawal Flays Abandonment of Past Govt's Projects
PEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Kwara State, Abdulhakeem Lawal, has condemned new administrations' penchant for abandoning projects and policies initiated by their predecessors, especially in the state, saying it hampers economic development of the state.
Lawal, son of the late former governor of the state, Mohammed Lawal, told newsmen in Ilorin that the Ilorin water projects policy during his late father's administration was a sore case in point, noting that its abandonment by successive governments has affected the supply of pipe-borne water to the people.
He promised the completion of the project and to provide a veritable housing scheme for all civil servants in the state if elected the governor next year, just as he stated readiness to continue with any uncompleted project by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)
"The government of my late father had unveiled plans to supply water to all Kwarans, starting from Ilorin," he recalled. "The All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) government had segmented the scheme into three phases of immediate, medium and long term.
"The immediate measure was the construction of good and effective boreholes in each of the 193 wards across the state, while the medium measure was the motorised concrete overhead tanks in all the wards; the structures are still on ground till date. The last phase would have been the expansion works on all the dams in the state but unfortunately, successive governments did not see need continuing with the plan."
According to Lawal, governance is all about service to people and provision of adequate security for lives and property, and "if an aspirant is truly contesting to serve his or her people, I believe the person should have the capacity to determine such projects that will bring progress, relief, succour to his people.
"If that is the case, I see no reason he (governor) shouldn't complete the projects he met on ground because those are the same people you say you want to give relief and succour."
Stating that he was into politics to contribute his quota to the development of the state, he stressed: "We need a change. We are looking at generational change. Things have to be done differently.
"Kwara state with its meagre resources needs an innovative thinker and good resource manager to bring about desired changes in such areas as affordable housing provision, agricultural-based industrialisation, including human capital development through skill acquisition."
Lawal, who said he would support either consensus or primary election arrangement as contained in the party's constitution, added that he planned to develop technical education to encourage human capital growth.
