PDP may adopt consensus candidate for Kwara gov

Date: 2014-11-06

There may be no primary election for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants in Kwara State, as plans are underway to adopt a consensus arrangement ahead of the 2015 elections.

No fewer than 12 aspirants are jostling for the party's ticket, but sources told The Guardian yesterday in Ilorin that some party elders across the three senatorial districts have been instructed by party executives to prune the number of the aspirants to one in each zone.

Subsequently, the eventual candidate would be selected from among the three through a system believed to have been embraced by all aspirants.

The state PDP Publicity Secretary, Rex Olawoye, claimed ignorance of the development. However, he said: "We are going to use all the amicable methods, even if it is going to be primary elections, to pick the party's candidate for the governorship polls."

According to sources, the resolutions were the highlights of a special consultative forum that attracted no fewer than 3,000 PDP members from the seven local councils in Kwara Central Senatorial zone and hosted by the former deputy governor, Joel Ogundeji.
