Senatorial aspirant raises the alarm over use of thugs in Kwara politics
As the 2015 general election approaches, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant for Kwara North Senatorial district, Alhaji Yinusa Yahaya, has raised the alarm over use of thugs by politicians in the state, advising them to play politics without violence.
Speaking with journalists after picking his expression of interest and nomination forms at the PDP secretariat in Ilorin, Alhaji Yahaya said people should be able to sit down and talk, no matter the differences.
The senatorial aspirant, who was a two-term lawmaker for Edu/Patigi/Moro Federal Constituency between 1999 and 2007, said his specific mission at the National Assembly, if elected, would be to complete all abandoned federal projects in the area.
Alhaji Yahaya, who listed the abandoned projects to include Gbugbu-Patigi-Share junction road and Chikanda-Kosubosu-Ilesha Baruba Road, added that some of the rural electrification projects embarked upon during his past tenure, had not been completed by his successor till date.
The former chairman House Committee on Works, also said that there should be continuity in governance to enable people enjoy dividends of democracy, adding that abandoned projects would not benefit anyone.
"There should be continuity. When someone starts a project and time does not allow him to complete the project, I expect that those who take over to be able to complete them. But unfortunately, they are all abandoned.
"The initiation of any project starts from the National Assembly. The implementors are the ministry of works etc, and once funds are provided for it in the budget, they must execute them. But when representatives are not concerned with people's welfare but are busy pursuing selfish agenda in the National Assembly, the people then suffer for it," he said.
Talking on his chances of clinching the PDP ticket to contest Kwara North senatorial seat, Alhaji Yahaya said his political structures that brought him to office in 1999 when PDP was in opposition, had not been abandoned and still remained intact to give him success.
"If we could win an election when we were in the opposition party, and now that we hold the federal government position, and all political gladiators in the state are in PDP, we are bound to win," he said.
