Train Students As Agents for National Development, Jonathan Advises Varsities
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has urged authorities of Nigerian universities to refrain from using their student as agents to destabilise the country.
President Jonathan, who gave the advice while delivering his address at the 30th convocation ceremony of the University of Ilorin held at the auditorium of the institution also noted that his administration is floating a programme to produce three million jobs annually to reduce unemployment in the country.
Represented by the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, President Jonathan urged the universities management to see the students as children under their care that must be tended until they can contribute to the development of the country.
He thanked the students for not allowing negative tendencies to affect their learning process in the university.
He said the government has expended over N3 billion through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and Ministry of Finance to develop the education sector.
He assured that his administration would continue to see to the development of infrastructures in the universities and the country in general.
In his address, the Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Dr. Benjamin Ikechukwu, Keagborekuzi 1, Dein of Agbor Kingdom called on the Federal Government to improve on funding to universities in order to restore academic excellence.
He said government's efforts in the education sector will bear little or no fruit except funding and other logistics are put into consideration in the interest of the nation.
"The University of Ilorin remains stable, peaceful and committed to high class ideals of academic excellence and sound moral rectitude for both staff and students. I thank the Federal Government and UNILORIN authority for the successes we have recorded so far," he added.
In his remark, Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Alhaji Saka Onimago, commend the university for having a peaceful 2013/2014 academic session.
In his welcome address tagged "Veni Vidi Vice" the Vice Chancellor, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali advised the graduating students to make self discipline and self control their watch word.
