'80% of Nigerian graduates unemployed' - Na'Allah

Date: 2014-08-15

Over 80 per cent of graduates in the country are presently roaming the streets without jobs, Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University, Professor Abdulrasheed Na'Allah, said yesterday.

He said it was regrettable that while graduates in foreign universities are creating jobs and wealth, the reverse is the case in Nigeria. Na'Allah, while addressing newsmen on the creation of a new department of Business and Entrepreneurship Education in the university, said the institution is determined to change the status quo.

He flayed what he called "craziness for academic attainment devoid of practicals", saying stakeholders must unite to de-emphasize certificate acquisition without commensurate skills. He added that with the new department, the university would be addressing the nation's triangular problem of"education/unemployment/unemployability".

The vice chancellor implored all stakeholders in the education sector to collaborate with the department to realise its set goals.

Speaking on the mass failure of students in the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Examination, Na'Allah said Nigerian universities must work together to find a solution to the problem.

Also speaking, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Alhaji Alabi Amuda, said the ministry would collaborate with the university to train students in entrepreneurship.
