OPINION: Importance of Hotel Star Rating in Kwara. By Michael Olatunji Tinuoye
The Star-Rating Systems was originally created in the USA by Mobil Travel Guides in 1958, which is a very subjective way of measuring hotel quality. Hospitality Business is an integral part of tourism and by implication, the business of helping the body, mind and spirit get rid of accumulated stress and tension, therefore, improving the health of those who patronize the hotels
If the classification of hotels is properly managed it would form the basis of control and standardisation in the hospitality industry. It is a proven fact that tourism cannot sell if tourists and visitors are not assured of the quality of service they will get from hotels in their choice of destination
The economic multiplier effects of hotel classification into 1 to 5 star status are unlimited as it will have positive economic effects on the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the government.
Star-rating systems of Hotel will enable visitors and tourists have a fore-knowledge of the quality of accommodation available and have choice, to suit their purpose. It will enable hoteliers to improve guest service delivery; enhance the maintenance culture of facilities and equipments, train their staff. More importantly, it will encourage healthy competition among the hoteliers
It is not an over-statement, hotel star-rating systems, if properly managed by an experienced Hospitality Management Consultant, would on the short-run create employment opportunities for both the unemployed youths and adults.
