Press Release: My Views on Emefiele's Confirmation as CBN Governor - Bukola Saraki
I was impressed by the candor and character exhibited by the nominee during the screening which lasted for almost two hours. Mr. Emefiele in my opinion exhibited character and depth of knowledge befitting of the portfolio of a CBN governor of the 21st Century.
It would have been typical considering the current political atmosphere for him to come belittling his predecessor's achievements and competence, but he chose against expectation to rise above the tide of mudslinging to stand in the path of truth praising the achievements of his predecessor and upholding the basic principles of independence of the CBN as a primer of an efficient Central Bank.
I consider Character as a key ingredient and a vital indicator of a virile leadership especially for an institution like the CBN. The character I refer to is one that standing true to convictions of integrity, not persuaded by sycophancy and bootlicking but obsessed with vision and clarity of thought.
The Nominee also impressed me with the depth of his knowledge and understanding of the challenge we face as a country and the critical role his position as governor of CBN can play in getting us out of the woods.
The nominee's responses to questions and candor in the face of indignation gives one hope that there is still light at the end of the tunnel. His character was best highlighted when the issue of the independence of the CBN was brought up. Aside the fact that he aligned his views to global best practices which supports that political non-interference principle should be maintained in the Senate as a minimum indicator today of a virile CBN.
It is my hope that when he assumes this post, he will put in his best efforts and not allow himself to be mineable to political tweaking and serve Nigeria and Nigerians to the best of his ability.
With the outing today, I wish him all the best and together with the people, we will surely hold him to the promises he made on the floor today.
