Abdullahi urges states to focus on sports of comparative advantage
Sports Minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has advised states to concentrate on their areas of comparative advantage in sports for better performance in the 2014 National Sports Festival.
The Minister said if this is done, all the participating states and the Federal Capital Territory coming for the 2014 "Paradise games" in Calabar will all be winners as their athletes would return home with medals.
"When we said the games should be open, one of the concerns some states expressed is that they don't have money like the oil rich states to buy super stars. What we said is that if every State concentrates on their area of comparative advantage then we all can be winners, "he said.
Speaking further, Abdullaji explained that there is no reason for any unhealthy competition if this model is adopted by the States, saying "If Kwara for example decide to dominate badminton and table tennis and say this are our games, it means that regardless of what other states are winning, Kwara will be in charge in the two sports.
"There is no reason; Adamawa for instance, will be competing with Delta State in 100metres when Adamawa can beat everyone in long distance race or Plateau taking their spots in 1500 or 3000 metres events. I believe if we follow this model we are going to have a good sports festival in 2014,"he emphasized.
