Court remands monarch, seven others in prison in Ilorin

An Ilorin Magistrate's Court on Tuesday remanded the traditional ruler of Tewu Village in Baruteen Local Government Area of Kwara, Sinapatiagi Sule, for alleged inhuman treatment.

The monarch was arraigned on a four-count charge with his seven chiefs for criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, cursing grievous hurt, and trial by ordeal.

The chiefs are: Musa Lafia, Gunu Adamu, Muhammed Akpo, Usman Sabi, Sule Taku, Gunu Ibrahim and Amuda Tabe.

The prosecutor, Adekunle Iwaleye, told the court that the monarch invited the seven complainants to his palace for allegedly belonging to witches and wizards.

Mr. Iwaleye said the accused beat up the complainants with sticks, tortured them by putting fire into their mouths as well as forcing them to drink concoction made of urine.

He said the complainants were grievously hurt, fell sick due to the inhuman treatment and hospitalised.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 97, 229, 246 and 214 of the Penal Code.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Joel Michael, ordered that the accused be remanded in Mondala Prison Yard, Ilorin.

He adjourned the case to November 26 for mention.
