Flooding: Kwara begins demolition of illegal structures
The Kwara State Ministry of Environment and Forestry will soon commence demolition of illegal structures along the banks of River Niger.
In a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Hon. Samuel Bamisaiye, and made available to journalists in Ilorin, the commissioner also warned of imminent flooding in areas located along the river banks
The commisioner also charged all residents in such places as Moro, Edu, Patigi and Kaiama Local Government Areas of the state to take proactive measures to minimise damages that may occur as a result of heavy rainfall and its attendant flood forecast.
Hon. Bamisaiye said the action became imperative due to an alert from the Federal Ministry of Environment, through its Flood Early Warning System (FEWS).
He also stressed the need for all buildings and structures along river banks or on streams to be evacuated with immediate effect, adding that the flood, according to the forecast, will occur inJebba and other adjoining towns to the River Niger between now April ending.
The Commissioner thus ordered all residents along river banks to vacate the areas and ensure strict compliance.
He also advised the general public to clean their drainages and stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters, rivers, waterways and streams so as to create a sustainable, friendly and hazard-free environment in Kwara State.
