Gov. Ahmed to tackle youth restiveness via empowerment

Date: 2011-06-04

The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has told traditional rulers in the state that his administration will create a platform for youth empowerment as part of its economic blue print.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Abdulwahab Oba and made available to Saturday Champion at Ilorin, the governor reiterated his promise to create a platform to engage youths meaningfully as part of the economic blueprint.

According to the statement, the Governor made this disclosure while receiving members of the State Traditional Council of Chiefs, who paid him a solidarity visit at the Government House, Alhaji Ahmed said his "administration would focus more on youth empowerment and job creation to curb restiveness among youths in various parts of the State."

He stated that youth restiveness in the past was largely responsible for their (youth) involvement in crime, political thuggery and other forms of anti-social behaviour which are inimical to development. The governor also disclosed that more attention would be focused on capacity building and human development in order to continue to build on the successes recorded by his predecessor in the areas of road development, healthcare services, rural electrification and rural transformation, among others.

Alhaji Ahmed, who thanked the traditional rulers for the supportive roles played to have a smooth transition in the State, noted that peaceful transition would pave the way for meaningful progress and allow for continuity in government.

According to him, "We should be thanking God for the peaceful transition in the State. It is now time for reconciliation for the state to move forward. Our victory is not for PDP alone, it belongs to all because we went through the process together in peace. So the victory is for all", the governor stressed.

Traditional rulers, Governor Ahmed said, should assist government to play complimentary roles especially in providing security in their various domains, pointing out that more investors would not be attracted to the State if there was no absolute security.

He also told the monarchs to help in stabilizing the polity in order to ensure good governance, pointing out that it was the only way by which citizens of the State could enjoy more dividends of democracy from the government.

Earlier, the Chairman of the State Traditional Council and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari had congratulated the governor on his landslide victory at the polls and pledged the support and loyalty of the council members to him.

The Emir, who said they were in Government House to felicitate with Governor Ahmed, praised the last administration of Dr. Bukola Saraki for his welfare programmes for traditional rulers and urged the new governor to sustain the tempo.

Alhaji Gambari also reminded the governor to fulfill all his campaign promises to the people of the State and prayed God to assist him to take the State to the height of his dream.
