My Limitless will wow Nigerians - Yinka Sax
Born and raised in Ilorin, Kwara State in the late 70s, Olayinka Owolabi, popularly known as Yinka Sax, chats to City Voice about life in music and as a gospel artiste.
Do you do other genres of music apart from gospel?
I play gospel music but as a professional musician, if my service is needed in other genres, I will oblige
So, how would you prefer to be described?
I’m a professional musician who does gospel.
Is your musical career through calling or discovery of talent?
I discovered my talent in music and I developed it by going to school but you have to understand that all gifts and talent comes from God. So, if you are given, then there is a purpose for it which you need to discover in God.
How long have you been in the industry?
I have been in the industry for as long as I can remember; even before I chose music as a career.
How many albums do you have?
I have one album but several singles. A new album titled ‘Limitless’ is on the way. It’s smoking hot and coming out soon. In fact, my best is yet to come because I put in my best in every production.
What are the challenges you had starting out?
Like everybody else, I faced challenges of time, money and being appreciated. I am a man of faith so I believe God will give me my expected end.
Have you ever been broke?
Of course yes. I worked hard, prayed and exercised my faith to overcome it.
Were you born with a silver spoon?
I wasn’t born with a silver spoon but believed in my goals and dreams…
Are you married?
Yes, I’m married to the beautiful wife who makes me happy.
What’s your assessment of gospel music?
It’s doing great. We are not there yet but we are not where we used to be. We are blessed.
Why is it that you are sometimes outside the country, do you find living outside Nigeria more comfortable?
I don’t find living outside Nigeria more comfortable, it’s just a matter of tapping into other available resources. One shouldn’t be restricted to one place.
How is the gospel music scene out there?
It’s an eye opener to more knowledge. It’s really good.

Kirk Wullum.
Can Yinka ever be without the saxophone?
Yinka without sax! Well, Yinka without sax will be Olayinka. And with sax, will be Yinka Sax.
