Why fuel scarcity persists

Date: 2012-04-01

INDICATIONS emerged yesterday about an imminent scarcity of petrol across Kwara, Oyo and some other states in the Southwest.

According to findings, several filling stations in Ilorin, the capital city of Kwara State, had long queues of buyers on Saturday evening, as others were shut due to lack of petrol, even as the same development was seen in Oyo and some parts of Ibadan.

In Ibadan, hundreds of people were stranded on the road, as many filling stations were locked up for lack of the product or fear of destruction which may arise due to panic buying, leading to scarcity of the product.

When contacted, the chairman of the Oyo/Osun branch of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chief Oyewole Akanni, said the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had been loading a quarter of the usual 2 million litres to Oyo, Osun, Kwara some parts of Lagos and the North, even as he said the corporation did not load the product at all on Saturday, which caused the artificial scarcity.
