Credit Bureau Expert Advocates Review of Section 215 of the 1999 Constitution
In order to ensure that the Nigeria Police remains peoples’ police and not to be used against the people and for bad governance, a renounced Credit Bureau Managing Director, Mr Tunde Popoola has advocated for review of section 215 subsections Four and Five of the 1999 constitution respectively.
Mr Popoola who made this assertion at the 2013 annual Management Day Celebration of Kwara state chapter of the Nigeria Institute of Management tagged “Good Governance: Enforcement of Law and order” held at University of Ilorin, said section 215 subsection 5 gives absolute power over the police to the president which state that direction given by the president shall not be inquired into in any court.
He explained that the section gives the state governors the power to direct the Commissioner of Police in their state. He however added that such power has also been taken away by the section 215, which contained a proviso that the commissioner of police may request for the President’s approval on the matter.
According to him, the implication of this provision is that the Nigeria Police is under the absolute control of the presidency. He therefore called for autonomous power for the police in order to discharge their lawful duties without any interference by government.
The CRC credit Bureau Limited Managing Director however called for complete overhaul of police tools, noting that there was need for continuous education and capacity building for men and officers of the Nigeria police in order to ensure efficient policing of the citizenry.
