Offa/Erinle Crisis: Panel Submits Report
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has reiterated that Offa and Erin-Ile communities are destined to live together and has therefore implored them to see differences as sources of strength and not weakness.
Ahmed said this on Wednesday 17 April in Ilorin while receiving the report of the Justice Adeyinka Sikiru Oyinloye Judicial Commission of Enquiry into the recent bloody Erin-Ile/Offa communal crisis.
The governor stressed the need for communities prone to communal clashes to always employ their proximity in strengthening their different economic potentials for development rather than for the promotion of destructive tendencies.
He said: "Our generation must always play critical role in advancing the course of harmony in the country as future generations would hold the present generation accountable for whatever happens", adding that growth and development can only thrive in a peaceful environment.
Ahmed, who described the presentation of the report of the Judicial Commission of Enquiry as a giant stride towards peace in the State, assured Justice Oyinloye and other members of the committee that their recommendations would be implemented to the letter.
As custodians of the traditions of their people, he said the traditional rulers would be involved in the implementation of the recommendations of the committee.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Judicial Commission of Enquiry, Justice Ayinka Sikiru Oyinloye, who maintained that members of the committee kept faithfully to the terms of reference of the committee, urged the people of Offa and Erin-Ile to see beyond the report by reconditioning their minds for peace in order to avert recurrence of communal crises in the future.
Affirming that the report was not influenced by any external consideration,he commended Governor Ahmed for giving the committee unfettered freedom to discharge its assignments.
It would be recalled that the State government on 6 February inaugurated the Justice Adeyinka Sikiru Oyinloye Judicial Commission of Enquiry on Erin-Ile/ Offa communal crisis to determine the immediate and remote causes of the crisis; the extent of damage to property; the number of lives lost and proffer immediate and long term measures to prevent future occurrence.
