Catholic Bishop Tasks Govts On Citizens' Welfare
The Catholic Bishop of Ilorin Diocese, the Most Rev. Ayo-Maria Atoyebi, has urged the three tiers of government to do more for the citizenry to ensure their well-being.
Atoyebi made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ilorin.
He urged governments at all levels to embark on people-oriented programmes.
"Most of the political manifestoes and electioneering promises remain unfulfilled and many projects unimplemented.
"Government exists for the welfare of the people, and as such, they are to cater for their common good and lift them up socially."
He advised the political class to be honest and desist from acts capable of causing division among the people.
"It is unfortunate that some of our politicians cannot boast of delivering the dividends of democracy to the people they are representing."
Atoyebi stressed that Nigerians deserved to enjoy the dividends of democracy such as good roads, clean water and security of lives and property.
