Clamour for 2015 Makes Mockery of Democracy - Ahmed
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State says the current clamour for elective positions ahead of 2015 general elections is making a mockery of democracy.
The clamour, he said, was one of the reasons why the nation's political system had remained stagnant.
Ahmed made the submission while speaking with reporters in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to him, when politicians begin to scramble for political positions when current office holders have not spent two of their constitutionally allowed four years in office, the situation questions the essence of governance.
He said, "The issue of 2015 is perceptive. People believe that they should start jostling for 2015. But, I don't think that is the issue now.
"We are just two years down the lane in service delivery. How much service have you delivered? How much more do you have to deliver? How much resources will be available to you to deliver these services. I think that is the most critical part of what we are doing right now.
"The issue of 2015 now makes a mockery of the democratic system. When you begin to talk of 2015 today when we are not even two years yet in office is not right because it changes the focus of the purpose of governance.
"It makes it look as if it is all about ascending to a particular position. We should begin to look at the context of responsibilities that are attached to our offices because it helps redefines who should ascend to the positions."
