NEMA Issues Urgent Advisory, Warns Nigerians to Prepare for Severe El Nino Climate Impact
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called on Nigerians to adopt proactive safety measures against the potential ramifications of the evolving El Nino climate pattern, cautioning over possible severe heat, diminished rainfall, prolonged drought, flooding, and food scarcity.
The disaster agency released the guidance on Monday through a statement titled "Super El Nino Is Coming: What You Can Do to Protect Yourself, Your Family and Your Community," detailing eight key strategies for citizens and local communities to mitigate impending risks.
El Nino is an established climatic phenomenon marked by abnormal warming of sea-surface temperatures within the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. The condition regularly alters global weather dynamics, influencing precipitation levels and temperatures differently depending on the region.
According to seasonal climate updates for 2026 released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the arrival of a pronounced El Nino event has been confirmed, with projections indicating significant alterations to rainfall patterns alongside above-average global temperatures. In mitigating health and environmental threats, NEMA counseled citizens to maintain adequate hydration, limit direct solar exposure between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., utilize lightweight clothing, and regularly monitor the well-being of young children, the elderly, and other susceptible demographic groups during extreme heat episodes.
The agency further advocated for prudent water conservation practices across households, including repairing faulty plumbing, storing potable water in a safe manner, and upholding sanitary standards around local water supplies.
Addressing potential food security challenges, NEMA recommended storing basic emergency food supplies, engaging in home gardening and local agricultural production, safeguarding livestock and poultry, and accessing official agricultural support frameworks.
Agricultural producers were specifically advised to adopt drought-resistant crop strains and enhanced farming techniques, alongside recommendations for individuals to diversify income streams and tap into existing government relief channels.
NEMA highlighted the necessity of rigorous personal hygiene, regular handwashing, and prompt medical treatment for health conditions, particularly to counter heat exhaustion, severe dehydration, and water-transmitted illnesses.
Additionally, the agency called for enhanced community resilience through organized early-warning setups, collective information distribution, and targeted support for vulnerable neighbors.
It urged members of the public to consistently monitor official weather channels, observe guidelines issued by NEMA and NiMet, and report emergency situations to designated public authorities.
