From the historic Ilorin Emirate comes the prestigious title of Sardauna (Minister of Defence) of Ilorin, while from Gwanara Emirate, the Governor has been honoured with a distinguished traditional title Jagaban (Chief Warrior) of Gwanara, the chieftaincy tittle is associated with his contributions to the people and development of the area. Together, these recognitions tell us a powerful story, a governor whose impact is being acknowledged across traditional and geographical boundaries.

SARDAUNA OF ILORIN: A TITLE OF LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, conferred the Sardauna title on Governor AbdulRazaq in recognition of his leadership, commitment to peace and unity, and developmental strides across Kwara State. The formal turbaning is scheduled for September 16, 2026.

The significance of the title should not be reduced to political symbolism. The word Sardauna evokes leadership, courage, responsibility and statesmanship, made particularly popularised by the legacy of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto.

We kwarans point to his administration's investments in roads, education, healthcare, water, urban renewal, youth and women empowerment, and social intervention programmes as evidence of a development oriented leadership style. Recent reports also highlight extensive road projects across the three senatorial districts, including major connections in Kwara North.

Even more importantly, the title represents the confidence of the Emirate's traditional institution in a governor who has consistently emphasised the preservation of Ilorin's cultural heritage and traditional institutions.

THE GWANARA STORY: WHEN DEVELOPMENT REACHES THE GRASSROOTS

The synergy between Governor AbdulRazaq and Gwanara Emirate also has a significant historical impacts.

In 2023, the Emir of Gwanara praised the AbdulRazaq administration for infrastructure and other interventions in the Emirate and disclosed that the Governor had earlier been conferred with the Emirate's traditional title of Dallatu of Gwanara. Among the projects cited were the Gwanara township road, Gwanara-Ilesha road, rehabilitation of waterworks, renovation of the basic health centre, schools and other facilities.

Ilorin Emirate represents one of the most influential traditional institutions in Kwara. Gwanara represents an important traditional and cultural community in Kwara North. Recognition from different traditional environments therefore carries a broader message about the reach of AbdulRazaq's administration.

This shows that his political identity is not the only thing being discussed; his track records of governance is also being measured by communities and traditional institutions.

This is why the honours should be viewed as more than crowns, turbans, swords or ceremonial robes. They are symbolic reminders that leadership comes with responsibility.
