The Honour of a Title, The Weight of a Legacy By Isiaka Kehinde Yusuf Osin

Date: 2026-09-08

There are honours that come with ceremony, and there are honours that carry a deeper cultural meaning. The forthcoming turbaning of His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, CON, as the Sardauna of Ilorin is, to me, one of such moments.

On Wednesday, 16 September 2026, the Emir's Palace in Ilorin will host a significant occasion as His Royal Highness, the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Chiefs, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, formally confers this distinguished traditional title on the Governor.

The occasion offers more than an opportunity for celebration. It provides a moment to reflect on leadership, public service and the place of traditional institutions in the life of our society.

The title Sardauna carries with it ideas of leadership, courage, responsibility, service and statesmanship. It is therefore more than a traditional honour; it also carries an expectation that its recipient will continue to embody the values associated with the office.

For His Excellency, I believe the honour should serve as another reminder of the responsibilities that accompany public leadership. The years ahead provide opportunities to deepen the values that matter in governance: listening to citizens, encouraging inclusion, responding with sensitivity to the concerns of the people and bringing communities closer together.

Leadership is ultimately strengthened when people feel heard, respected and carried along. Whatever one's political persuasion may be, these remain enduring principles of good public service.

Beyond politics, however, this occasion speaks to something much larger. Our traditional institutions and cultural heritage are among the treasures that give Kwara its identity.

The Ilorin Emirate system connects generations, preserves history and gives meaning to our collective memory. These institutions therefore deserve the respect and protection of all, irrespective of political, social or personal differences.

I particularly encourage Kwarans at home and in the diaspora to take pride in our heritage and remain connected to the traditions that define us. Modernity should not make us forget our roots. Rather, genuine progress should give us greater reason to preserve, understand and pass those roots on to future generations.

The gathering of distinguished Nigerians expected for the occasion will undoubtedly add colour and grandeur to the ceremony. Yet, the deeper significance lies beyond the splendour of the day.

A title can be conferred in an afternoon; the responsibility attached to it is carried for a lifetime.

As Ilorin prepares to witness this distinguished occasion, I congratulate Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and pray that Almighty Allah grants him the wisdom, humility and strength to carry the honour with dignity and to continue to serve with a sense of responsibility to the people.

May the Sardauna title become not merely a mark of honour, but a renewed call to service, unity, responsibility and a greater commitment to the common good.
