Team Nigeria has recorded a historic achievement by winning the gold medal in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee announced the victory on its official Facebook page on Sunday, describing the feat as a landmark achievement for the country's debut appearance at the global competition.

"Team Nigeria has won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China," the organisation stated.

Two students of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, also distinguished themselves at the championship. The school confirmed that Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf both won medals at the grand finale of the competition.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the school congratulated the students, noting that Maryam Yusuf was among the medal winners at the prestigious international event.

Nigeria qualified for the Spelling Bee World Cup after impressive performances at both the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship, making this year's participation the country's first appearance at the global tournament.

The gold medal victory further strengthens Nigeria's growing reputation in international academic competitions and marks a significant milestone for the nation's spelling team.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee and Ar-Raheem International College congratulated the students, coaches and the entire team for bringing honour to Nigeria through their outstanding performance in China.
