The Kwara State Fire Service has successfully contained a fire outbreak at a commercial building in the Tanke area of Ilorin, preventing what could have resulted in extensive property loss.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday after the service received a distress call at about 2:19 a.m. reporting a fire at a storey building beside Terminus Motor Park along University Road, Tipper Garage, Tanke.

According to the spokesman of the fire service, Hassan Adekunle, firefighters responded swiftly and found the building, which comprises six shops and one kiosk, engulfed in flames.

He said the prompt and coordinated efforts of the firefighters confined the fire to only one kiosk, while all six shops were successfully saved from destruction.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by a power surge.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, commended the professionalism and rapid response of the firefighters.

He also advised residents to ensure electrical installations are carried out by qualified professionals, switch off electrical appliances when not in use, and install surge protection devices to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks caused by power fluctuations.
