Court Remands Fake Policewoman In Ilorin
An Ilorin Chief Magistrates' Court has remanded a suspected fake policewoman, Iyabo Fagbemi, who was dragged to the court for impersonation.
Fagbemi, 40, a resident of Olujide compound in Oja Iya area of Ilorin was arraigned on a one-count charge of impersonating a police officer, contrary to section 132 of the Penal Code law.
The Police prosecutor, Insp. Moshood Adebayo, told the court that Fagbemi was arrested by Insp. Medinat Garba when the accused who claimed to be an Inspector, failed to give satisfactory account of herself.
Adebayo added that although the accused had claimed to be on transfer from Ondo State Police Command to Kwara, she could not explain how she became a police officer or present documents to back the transfer.
He said investigation conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Kwara Police Command, Ilorin had revealed that the accused was not a police officer.
When her plea was taken, Fagbemi pleaded not guilty to the charge and requested for bail, which was opposed by the prosecutor.
He claimed that releasing her on bail would jeopardise the investigation.
Counsel to the accused, Mr. Ambali Mujahid who made an oral application for her bail told the court that his client had been in police custody for 36 days.
He argued that sending her back to prison would amount to pre-trial punishment and a denial of her fundamental human right.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Lekan Adegbite, said in his ruling on the bail application, "this matter is novel and for that reason, she should be remanded in prison."
He then adjourned the case till March 19, for further mention.
