Kwara State Government Refutes Social Media Claims on 2026 Budget
The Kwara State Government has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that the 2026 state budget allocates funds for new vehicles for government officials, calling the claims false and misleading.
In an official statement, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, described the allegations as disinformation. He said the claims that the state budgeted N10.3 billion for new cars and only N203 million for schools in 2026, and that N3.7 billion was spent on vehicles in 2025 compared with N16 million for schools, were entirely untrue.
Ajakaye highlighted the government's substantial investments in education. In 2025, Kwara State provided N3.55 billion as counterpart funding to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), accessing N7.1 billion to construct 92 classroom blocks, renovate 193 classrooms, install 36 solar-powered boreholes, build VIP toilets, fabricate 14,056 units of student furniture, and fence 19 schools. Additionally, the state purchased over 640,000 textbooks, library books, special education materials, sports equipment, and digital learning devices.
Regarding vehicle purchases, Ajakaye clarified that acquisitions were for official purposes, such as new SUVs for judges and senior public servants, in compliance with National Judicial Council rules. He noted that only 29% of the N13.3 billion budgeted for vehicles was spent in 2025.
For the 2026 budget, N35.4 billion is allocated to education and N13.3 billion for vehicles, directly contradicting the social media narrative. Ajakaye stressed that such disinformation threatens democratic governance by misleading citizens and misrepresenting government priorities.
He urged the public to verify claims from credible sources and warned that misinformation could undermine informed civic participation and societal trust.
