Kwara to Boost Digital Inclusion as Govt Backs Tech Initiative for Market Women
The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the digital economy at the grassroots by supporting initiatives focused on empowering women in the informal sector.
The Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology, Damilola Adelodun, made this known while receiving representatives of the AY Community and the Tumishe Johnson Household Foundation during a courtesy visit to her office in Ilorin.
The development was contained in a statement signed by the Press Secretary of the ministry, Muhammed Saka, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday.
Adelodun said the Tech 4 Market Women initiative aligns with the development agenda of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, particularly in empowering women, strengthening small businesses and promoting financial inclusion through technology.
She noted that training market women in financial literacy and basic internet usage is essential to improving productivity and enabling traders to adapt to the evolving digital economy.
According to her, technology remains a critical tool for transforming micro and small-scale businesses across the state.
Adelodun also assured the delegation of the Ministry's readiness "to collaborate with credible partners to scale up such initiatives," stressing that the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology will continue to support programmes that directly impact market women and promote sustainable economic development at the grassroots.
Speaking on behalf of the AY Community and the Tumishe Johnson Household Foundation, Solomon Adami thanked the commissioner for the reception and expressed appreciation for her willingness to engage with the initiative.
He said the foundation was seeking the support of the Kwara State Government to strengthen and scale the Tech 4 Market Women programme across the state.
Adami disclosed that the initiative had so far trained 220 market women in selected markets within the Ilorin metropolis.
"The training focused on practical financial literacy, basic internet usage, and the use of simple digital tools to support daily trading activities and business growth," he stated.
Adami added that the next phase of the programme would focus on mentorship and community building to provide ongoing guidance and peer support for the participants.
According to him, the foundation plans to engage government agencies, market associations, financial institutions and development partners to ensure the long-term impact of the initiative across Kwara State.
