Security Group Warns Kwara South Cashew Farmers Against Lone Farm Visits
A security outfit operating within the Kwara South Senatorial District has issued a stern warning to cashew farmers and other agricultural producers to exercise extreme caution during the current harvest season due to persistent security threats.
The advisory was released on Wednesday by the Joint Security Watch, Kwara South, in a statement signed by its coordinator, Elder Olaitan Oyin-Zubair. The group acknowledged the growing fear and hardship facing farmers particularly those in the cashew sector who are now entering the period when they should be reaping the rewards of their labour.
In light of the prevailing risks, the statement advised farmers to temporarily avoid visiting farms located in isolated or high-risk areas until the security situation stabilizes.
"Where farm visits are unavoidable, farmers are advised to move strictly in groups and ensure prior coordination and clearance from local vigilante hunters, community security structures, or recognised security agencies operating in their areas," the statement read.
The group emphasised that such measures are necessary to prevent further abductions or attacks as the agricultural community navigates one of its most critical economic periods of the year.
"Under no circumstances should farmers go to their farms alone at this time. Personal safety must take precedence over economic activity. No harvest is worth a life," Oyin-Zubair was quoted as saying.
The Joint Security Watch reassured residents that ongoing security operations are being carried out in collaboration with community-based security outfits and relevant authorities to reclaim farmlands, secure forest routes and restore confidence across Kwara South.
It also called for calm, vigilance and cooperation from farmers and other stakeholders, assuring that efforts were underway to address the security situation and ensure the safe return of agricultural activities in the affected communities.
Kwara South, a major agricultural zone in the state, is known for the production of cashew and other cash crops.
In recent months, however, farmers in parts of the district have raised concerns over insecurity, including attacks linked to criminal elements operating around farmlands and forest corridors.
