KBC Urges AbdulRazaq to Intervene as Ilorin - Abuja Flights Become Nigeria's Most Expensive
A sociocultural group based in Ilorin, Kwara By Consensus (KBC), has urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to intervene in the current exorbitant airfares between Ilorin and Abuja, describing the situation as an act of economic sabotage that undermines accessibility and growth in the state.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by KBC Chairman Mallam AbdulHamid Sambo, the group highlighted that the Ilorin - Abuja air route has the highest fare in the country, disproportionately affecting business, tourism, and intergovernmental engagements. Sambo stated: "The soaring costs of air travel are crippling Kwara's economy. This cannot continue without urgent action from the state government to advocate for fair pricing and improved connectivity."
The group called for affordable airfares on the route, stressing that reduced travel costs are critical to boosting trade, investment, and socio-economic development in the state. KBC's appeal underscores growing concerns over the financial burden placed on residents and stakeholders who rely on frequent travel between Kwara and the federal capital.
"Flight fare to and from Ilorin is considered the most expensive in the country. The prohibitive pricing of air tickets is discouraging visitors, investors, and even indigenes from travelling to the state, thereby stifling tourism, business opportunities, and the ability of people to witness firsthand the remarkable transformations taking place under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq's administration."
The statement added that,' it is disheartening that at a time when Ilorin, the state capital, is undergoing a massive urban renewal program transforming into a modern megacity with improved infrastructure, aesthetics, and economic viability many Nigerians are being priced out of the opportunity to visit and experience these developments.
"The high cost of air travel makes it nearly impossible for tourists to explore Kwara's rich cultural heritage, such as the Esie Museum, Owu Falls, and other emerging attractions.
"It also discourages potential investors, diaspora Kwarans, and visitors who wish to engage with the state's growing economy," the sociocultural group noted.
The KBC which described the current situation as unacceptable, called on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to take urgent action by:
The statement also said that,"Kwara State is on a transformative journey, and we cannot allow exorbitant airfares to become an obstacle to progress.
"We urge the state government to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves, as affordable air travel is critical to boosting commerce, tourism, and overall connectivity.
"We also call on the Federal Government, aviation stakeholders, and well-meaning Nigerians to join in advocating for fair pricing, ensuring that Kwara State remains open and accessible to all."the statement concluded.
