NSIB Probes Diamond Aircraft Crash-Landing in Ilorin; Data Analysis Underway
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an on-site investigation into the crash-landing of a Diamond training aircraft operated by the Aviation Training School. The incident occurred at 17:28 local time on 23 May 2025 during a simulated instrument approach on Runway 05 at General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin.
NSIB Director General Captain Alex Badeh Jr. visited the crash site on 24 May 2025 to evaluate the situation and supervise the investigation's preliminary stages. He confirmed that the aircraft's data card was retrieved and analysis has begun.
Captain Badeh Jr. stated: "Our investigators are on the ground and have begun work in earnest. The damaged aircraft is positioned on the runway's left side, with recovery operations nearly complete. Four specialists will remain at the site to finalise critical measurements before returning to Abuja."
The data card will be analysed at NSIB's transport safety laboratory to support the bureau's findings and inform safety recommendations. A preliminary report will be issued within 30 days.
Captain Badeh Jr. underscored the bureau's commitment to a thorough and transparent investigation: "Our role is to determine what occurred, to whom it occurred, how it occurred, and most importantly, how to prevent a recurrence."
He also confirmed that both aircraft occupants are conscious and coherent. One has undergone an MRI scan, and both are receiving appropriate medical care. "They are conscious, coherent, and in stable condition," he added.
The NSIB chief further assured the public that Nigeria's airspace remains safe and will issue further updates as the investigation proceeds.
